Wheelchair maintenance might not be easy, but it’s very important. Beyond just cleanliness, wheelchair maintenance also affects performance and longevity. Just like any equipment, proper care optimizes performance and increases how long equipment can be safely and effectively used. In addition, a grungy, poorly-maintained wheelchair makes a statement about the user. Taking care of its appearance and functionality is not so different from considerations taken with personal appearances.
Wheelchair Maintenance: Key Areas of Consideration
- Cleaning and inspection — Day-to-day, it’s important to keep the wheelchair clean and dry. As need, but usually about once a month, use basic household cleaners to wipe down the chair. During these routine cleanings, take a moment to ensure that there is no damage or parts that are overly worn.
- Wheels and tires — If you have air-filled tires (pneumatic), check air pressure weekly. Under-inflated tires make it harder to roll the chair and cause breakdown of the tires’ sidewalls. Also, check for loose or broken spokes each week. And, don’t forget the bearings and remove carpet fibers and other bits with tweezers or small pliers.
- Seat and backrest — Wash seat and backrest about once a month. Also, keep an eye out for general wear, tears or other damage. This is not only keeps the chair looking nicely, but also ensures optimal comfort and support.
