Three Parts of a Balanced Disabled Exercise Routine

A balanced disabled exercise routine incorporates three key types of exercise.  Each of these exercises build off each other and combine resulting in much improved overall health and fitness.

Flexibility
Flexibility exercises range from simple stretches to tai chi and yoga.  Flexibility exercises provide a number of benefits, including:

  • Enhances range of motion
  • Prevents injury
  • Reduces pain and stiffness

Strength Training
Strength training exercises use weights or other resistance to:

  • Build muscle and bone mass
  • Improve balance
  • Help improve performance and endurance in cardiovascular activities

Cardiovascular Exercise or Conditioning
Cardiovascular exercise or conditioning is also termed aerobics.  It raises heart rate by increasing the intensity of the exercise.  The primary benefits are:

  • Builds strong heart muscles
  • Lowers resting heart rate
  • Increases endurance
